DVD FREAK RANT

I took a look at the COMPLAINT FOR INJUNCTIVE RELIEF FOR MISAPPROPRIATION OF TRADE SECRETS

A couple of things really bothered me about this. The DVD Copy Control Association Inc. is a not for profit association? What the hell is that? Every produced DVD in the world pays this company royalty. I wish I had the revenue that this “not for profit” company has.

I checked into the lawyers these people are using and find out that they are probably one of the top 100 firms in this country. WEIL, GOTSHAL & MANGES LLP have offices world wide including Brussels and London. Please help me to understand what has happened in this world when a not for profit corporation has more money then the entire sum of a small tax paying community. How loophole filled can our laws really be.

There are over 72 defendants and 64 allegations here. Bring on the fascism. Sites are being charged with LINKING to other sites with “questionable” content. What happened to freedom of speech, liberty and JUSTICE? Where is the justice in a group of stinking rich “not-for-profit” corporate junkies going after the few people who have cleverly invented a way to store a copy of a movie that they bought with their money. When you use CSS you are not only preventing it from being copied you are also dictating that you must buy something to decode it. That’s like selling you a book and telling you its in code and you have to buy my decoder glasses to read it, you can’t make your own glasses or I’ll sue you.

Also on a final note, WHY isn’t anybody suing Xing for not encrypting their keys! They made all this possible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For that matter, why don’t they sue the US government for forcing them to use a 40 bit encryption keys, which can be broken by a child/young adult (and it was) in a few days.

“The effect of the unlawful activities of the Defendants on the motion picture industry, centered in California -- as well as on the numerous California computer and consumer electronics businesses, including 73 companies in California of which there are 42 in Santa Clara County and an additional 17 in other Bay area locations -- is immeasurable” Bullshit, it’s immeasurable all right, immeasurably small. Nothing is immeasurable, they don’t want to say because to quantify this would bring to public eye how really minuscule these values are in comparison to the total revenue generated by the whole industry. The DVD industry is making more money then ever. If anything, due to this publicity they have sold even more. Quit crying. So somebody broke your wimpy encryption. Someone can break every encryption eventually. DVD CCA, is fat, rich, and greeeeeeedy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you want my opinion on CSS, I think it’s a waste of time. Copy protection hasn’t worked for any other media (Video tapes,CD….., what makes them think it will work with DVD? Why? Because of inventive, inquisitive, people like ourselves.
